Sleep Better: Beating Anxiety at Bedtime

Do you ever feel worried when it's time to sleep? Does your mind race with thoughts that keep you awake? You're not alone! Many people struggle with anxiety at bedtime. But don't worry - there are ways to feel calmer and sleep better.

Why Anxiety and Sleep Don't Mix

When we're anxious, our bodies think there's danger. This makes it hard to relax and fall asleep. Then, not getting enough sleep can make us feel more worried the next day. It's what I would refer to as a ‘vicious cycle’,  before long, you aren’t sure which one came first… However, you can break the pattern.

Let’s have a look at ways you can break the cycle, beginning tonight…

Six Tips to Help You Sleep Better

  1. Stick to a sleep schedule: Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day.

  2. Make your bedroom comfy: Keep your room dark, quiet, and cool for better sleep.

  3. Relax before bed: Read a book, listen to calm music, or do some gentle stretches.

  4. Write down your worries: Keep a notebook by your bed to jot down any thoughts that bother you.

  5. Take deep breaths: Breathe in slowly for 4 counts, hold for 4, then breathe out for 4.

  6. Move your body: Exercise during the day can help you sleep better at night.

When to Ask for Help

If you've tried these tips and still have trouble sleeping, it's okay to ask for help. A professional can help you find more ways to feel calm and sleep well.

Remember, everyone feels anxious sometimes. With practice and patience, you can learn to relax and get the good sleep you need!
