The Impact of Stress on Sleep: Building Better Sleep Habits

July 07, 20242 min read

Waking up with that feeling of rejuvenation. Bliss... I have also noticed how stress can mess with it.

I'm sure you can relate to the value of a good night's sleep. It's probably one of my favourite things in life. Waking up with that feeling of rejuvenation. Bliss... I have also noticed how stress can mess with it. Sometimes, instead of sweet dreams, I'd often end up stuck with a head full of worries, tossing and turning all night long.

Have you ever had trouble switching off at bedtime because your mind just won't stop racing? It happens to a lot of us, especially when stress or anxiety is hanging around. But there are easy things we can do to help our bodies relax and get ready for sleep. I found some simple techniques to help ease my mind and get the rest I need. In this blog post, I want to share these tips with you, so you can have better sleep too.

Creating Your Nightly Routine 🌙

Having a regular bedtime and making your bedroom a cosy place to sleep can really help. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day – it helps your body get into a rhythm.

Before bed, take some time to wind down. Turn off screens like phones and TVs at least an hour before bedtime, as the light and mind-stimulation can make it harder to fall asleep. Instead, try reading a book, listening to calming music, or taking a warm bath/shower. These activities can help signal to your body that it's time to relax.

You can also try doing some gentle stretches or breathing exercises to release tension. Start by stretching your arms, legs, and back, then take some slow, deep breaths in and out. This can help quiet your mind and prepare your body for sleep.

Finally, make sure your bedroom is a comfortable place to sleep. Keep it dark, quiet, and cool – around 18°C (65°F) is ideal for most people. Invest in a comfortable mattress and pillows, and consider using blackout curtains or a white noise machine if you're sensitive to light or noise.
